Certified FTTX Technician – Installation and Testing

Course Objectives:

Fn-SimpliFiberPro 11a sAfter completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the theoretical concepts of optical fiber transmission especially as it relates to FTTX / FTTH environments
  • Explain the key design considerations and differences between PON and AON architectures and understand how WDM technology operates in both systems
  • Demonstrate a professional understanding of Next Generation Access Networks (NGAN) including OSP, hardware, tools and testers, procedures and health and safety
  • Complete in a ‘best practice’ manner a series of practical cable splicing, build and installation, testing and trouble-shooting activities appropriate to FTTX networks
  • Receive their Certified FTTX Technician accreditation (on successful completion of assessments)

Course Overview:

This highly practical instructor-led workshop prepares technicians for all aspects of cable splicing and installation, testing and trouble-shooting on optical access networks – leading to formal Certification.

FTTH/FTTH represents the future of access networks as operators are migrating away from traditional access networks (e.g. copper, cable) in order to deliver current and future ‘bandwidth-hungry’ services to customers.

The capacity of these fiber optics cables to carry data is huge, especially when compared to twisted copper pair technology e.g. a single copper pair has the capacity to carry 6 telephone calls whilst a fiber connection can carry 2.5 million calls.

The complete range of theoretical concepts, technologies, architectures, topologies, techniques and procedures relating to the FTTX environment are covered in the classroom.

Course participants then get the opportunity to put their new found knowledge into practice -but in the safety of the laboratory environment – as they embark on a comprehensive series of cable splicing, installation, testing and trouble-shooting activities.

Pre-Requisite for Participants:

Participants should have previous experience of working on fiber networks.
Prior attendance at course A3: GPON FTTX Workshop.

Fiber optics Installation and Repair (I&R) technicians and supervisors, cable splicers and other telecommunications professionals and contractors who are employed in (or seeking employment in) the build, installation, repair and trouble-shooting of FTTX / FTTH systems.

Course Duration:
5 days workshop with hands-on labs (60% practical, 40% classroom).

  • Certification:
    At the end of the course, participants will partake in written and practical examinations.
    They will receive their Certified FTTX Technician Certificate if:

    1. a) They score 75% or higher on the written element AND
    2. b) They score 80% or higher on the practical assessment
