Course Overview:

This course provides a basic understanding of the configuration, communications, and management of TCP/IP and its associated protocols. It introduces students to the main concepts of IP applications. The growth of Internetworks especially the cellular networks has been exponential and therefore costs attributed to them need to be managed. IP plays a critical role in reducing the overall cost of ownership. It helps to reduce the OPEX and maximize return on investment. Use of IP however does raise questions about its QoS and security.

The course covers topics of IP Security and QoS once decisions to deploy IP are done. Migration of networks from legacy to next generation using IP are also touched upon. It covers policy-based QoS architecture which supports infrastructure for delivering QoS based applications and the emerging trends in IP QoS. It explains the techniques, principles and technology associated with implementing IP Quality of Service (QoS). The IETF’s Integrated Services standard and accompanying protocols such as RSVP, RTP and RTCP are described. It also covers how introduction of IP has improved their performance of financial systems and information exchange.

This course is designed to address the needs in telecommunications industry of non-technical managers by introducing them to IP and its elements within it that will be utilised in Data Networks, NGN, IMS, 3GPP, VoIP and other telecommunications technologies that is employing the IP protocols.
