From SDH to Optical Transport Network (OTN)

Course Objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand optical fiber transmission systems
  • Appreciate SDH technology (including transmission hierarchy & network components)
  • Comprehend DWDM technology (including transmission systems & network components)
  • Describe OTN architecture and protocols
  • Recognize how OTN can ensure transportation, multiplexing, routing, supervision and survival of customer signals through a treatment executed primarily in optics.

Course Overview

This instructor-led training event guides participants through the migration from SDH transport technologies to Optical Transport Network (OTN) technologies.

An Optical Transport Network refers to a series of standards created to combine the benefits of SONET/SDH with the bandwidth-expanding capabilities of DWDM in order to build more network functionality into optical networks – and with considerable costs savings.

Migration from SDH to OTN has been happening for a number of years now – as operators recognize the need to provide network capacity and functionality to cater for the dramatic changes occurring in the telecommunications landscape e.g. big data, Internet of Everything, 5G backhaul, cloud computing, Smart cities.

The course the key OTN technologies, components (Active, Passive and Optical), architectures, parameters and standards involved. An introduction into OTN Planning is also included as part of this course agenda.

Pre Requisite

  • Good understanding of telecommunications transmission principles.
  • Prior attendance at Course C1: SDH/DWDM Fundamentals is highly desirable

Who Should Attend

Fiber core network supervisors, planners, technicians, graduates and apprentices, strategic and technical telecommunication managers, consultants, IT professionals, systems engineers, marketing and sales professionals plus other telecommunications workers who plan on using, evaluating, designing or working with optical transport networks.

This course acts as a pre-cursor to Course C4: DWDM and optical networking for Metro and Long Haul

  • Basic concepts of transmission and network evolution
  • Overview of PDH
  • Migration to SONET/SDH
  • Optical Fibers (fibers standard, fiber optic parameters, attenuation, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion)
  • Passive Components (fibers, splices, connectors) and Active Components (transmitters, receivers, optical amplifiers, regenerators)
  • Optical Components for WDM Systems (multiplexer/de-multiplexer, transponder, Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (OADM), Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM), Optical Cross Connect (OXC)).
  • DWDM Systems (optical link key parameters, power budget, Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR), Coarse Wave Division Multiplexer (CWDM), DWDM)
  • ITU Standards
  • Optical Transport Network Evolution (Transport network planning, optical transport network, automatically switched optical network)
  • Optical Transport Network (Architecture, multiplexing, analogue, optical layer, digital electrical layer, FEC, overhead).
